Accounting and Advisory for Contract Milkers

Clarity. Partnership. Steady Progress.

Practical, steady accounting and advisory for contract milkers, from someone who knows both sides of the contract.

Clear thinking and calm partnership for contract milkers who want straight answers and support they can rely on.

Why Contract Milkers Choose Steady Path

Contract milking is a business with a capped upside, so what you keep comes down to what it costs you to do the job.

You are paid a fixed rate per kgMS. That gives you more certainty than most farming businesses, but it also means a good season on the farm does not necessarily mean a good season for you. Your margin comes from running the job well and knowing your costs.

Meanwhile you carry the labour, some of the operating costs and gear depending on your contract. Your costs run all year. Production usually does not.

I understand how that shapes your year, your cashflow and what it means when the contract comes up for renewal.

I have seen both sides of the contract

For eleven years I worked with one of New Zealand's largest dairy farming groups, a business running twenty farms and producing around six million kgMS, and I met regularly with the contract milkers running those farms.

Contracts vary a lot. What the rate covers, what you are responsible for, what the owner picks up. That is why you cannot judge one by the rate alone.

When you show me your contract, I am not looking at it cold. I can work out what it actually leaves you once your costs are in, and whether that is the margin you should be getting for what you are carrying.

If you are partway through a contract, knowing where your margin actually sits tells you what to do about it. Whether there is room to talk to the owner, what you would need from the next one, and what you should be looking for when the term is up.

A contract that works for both parties lasts. One that quietly does not work for you will not, and that helps nobody.

How I Support Contract Milkers

I help contract milkers bring clarity and confidence to their decisions through:

Knowing your cost per kgMS

Your rate is fixed, so your real number is what it costs you to produce those solids. Once you know that, you can tell at a glance whether a contract is worth taking and where your money is actually going.

Budgets and cashflow forecasting

A budget you can work to, revisited through the season. Your costs run all year while production does not, so the tight months need planning for rather than getting through.

Weighing up a new contract or a renewal

Before you commit to a new farm or sign up for another term, we work through what it would actually leave you, and how it compares to what you have now.

Plant and machinery

If you own the gear, what to buy, when to replace it, and whether to finance or pay cash. Those decisions affect your tax, your cashflow and your ability to do the job, and they are worth thinking about before the tractor breaks down rather than after.

Your people

Payroll, PAYE, employment costs and the accounting side of having staff. For most contract milkers this is the biggest cost in the business and the biggest headache.

Your GST returns

Prepared and filed every period. I can review your coding or take care of it all, whichever suits how you like to run things.

Your annual accounts and tax

Done properly and on time, with the reasons explained.

The tax you can see coming

I would rather tell you early what is coming and work out how to manage it than hand you a bill with a fortnight to find the money.

Structure that still fits

What made sense when you started may not suit where you are now, particularly if you are building toward sharemilking or ownership.

Who I Work With

I support contract milkers across the Waikato, including:

  • first-time contract milkers

  • established contract milkers on their second or third farm

  • contract milkers running larger operations with staff

  • those weighing up a new contract or a renewal

  • those working toward sharemilking or farm ownership

If you are taking on a contract milking role, whether it is your first or a move to a new farm, I have specific support for that. See Stepping into contract milking. Looking at the next step? See Sharemilkers.

Working Together

A calm, steady rhythm that respects your season:

  1. Start with a conversation to understand what is happening on the ground

  2. Build clarity by aligning your numbers, priorities, and decisions

  3. Move steadily with regular check-ins, practical planning, and support that fits your season

No overwhelm. No pressure. Just steady progress.

A Note from Me

I grew up on a small block, always around animals and helping out where I could. That early, hands-on rhythm shaped how I understand rural work — the pace, the pressure, and the pride that comes with it.

I’ve spent my whole career in the rural sector, from owner-operators through to a large corporate dairy group. I know the realities behind the numbers, and the responsibility that sits on your shoulders.

Steady Path exists to bring clarity, calm, and partnership to people who do real work in real communities.
