Practical, steady accounting and advisory for sharemilkers, from someone who knows a dairy year.
Clear thinking and calm partnership for sharemilkers who want straight answers and support they can rely on.
Why Sharemilkers Choose Steady Path
Sharemilking puts real upside in your hands, and real exposure with it.
Your biggest asset walks around eating grass, and you take a share of the milk income rather than a fixed rate. When the payout moves, it moves on you.
That cuts both ways. A good season is genuinely yours. A poor one lands on you too, and the costs do not wait for the payout to recover.
I understand how that shapes your year, your cashflow and the decisions you make about the herd.
Corporate experience, applied to your business
For eleven years I worked with one of New Zealand’s largest dairy farming groups, a business running twenty farms and producing around six million kgMS.
I built their budgets, forecast their seasons, and sat in the room when the decisions got made. Not just at the year end, but every month, with the numbers in front of us and the farms still running.
Your income moves with the payout in exactly the same way theirs did. Knowing your break-even, seeing the pressure coming before it arrives, working out whether the extra feed will pay for itself. That is the same work, whether it is twenty farms or one.
Most sharemilkers are making those decisions on the same margins, with a fraction of the support. There is no reason the thinking should be any less rigorous just because the business is smaller.
How I Support Sharemilkers
I help sharemilkers bring clarity and confidence to their decisions through:
Budgets built on your break-even
We set the season’s budget on a realistic payout, and work out what your break-even milk price actually is. Once you know that number, every forecast update means something. Above it is profit. Below it is pressure, and you will know it is coming rather than discovering it later.
Reforecasting as the season goes
The payout moves, a dry summer arrives and you are weighing up buying in feed. Those are cashflow decisions as much as farming ones, and it helps to know what you have got room for before you commit.
Livestock valuations
Herd scheme or national standard cost is one of the bigger decisions in your accounts, and once the election is made it follows you. It affects your tax, and it affects what your herd is worth on paper when you go to the bank. I will talk you through what it means rather than just filling in the box.
Your herd as an asset
Stock debt, herd improvement, and what the herd is actually doing for your equity. These are business decisions with real money in them, not just farming ones.
Where you are heading
Some sharemilkers are building toward farm ownership. Others are building the herd, moving up orders, or simply running a good business they intend to keep running. Whichever it is, the numbers should be pointed at it deliberately rather than by default.
Your GST returns
Prepared and filed every period. I can review your coding or take care of it all, whichever suits how you like to run things.
Your annual accounts and tax
Done properly and on time, with the reasons explained.
The tax you can see coming
I would rather tell you early what is coming and work out how to manage it than hand you a bill with a fortnight to find the money.
Your people
Payroll, PAYE, employment costs and the accounting side of having staff.
Structure that still fits
What made sense when you started may not suit where you are now. Companies, trusts, partnerships, and how they work for tax, debt and what comes next.
Who I Work With
I support sharemilkers across the Waikato, including:
variable order sharemilkers
50/50 sharemilkers
those moving up an order or onto a new farm
sharemilkers running larger operations with staff
established sharemilkers who intend to keep sharemilking
those working toward farm ownership
If you are taking on a sharemilking position, whether it is your first or a step up, I have specific support for that. See Stepping up to sharemilking. Contract milking rather than sharemilking? See contract milkers.
Working Together
A calm, steady rhythm that respects your season:
Start with a conversation to understand what is happening on the ground
Build clarity by aligning your numbers, priorities, and decisions
Move steadily with regular check-ins, practical planning, and support that fits your season
No overwhelm. No pressure. Just steady progress.
A Note from Me
I grew up on a small block, always around animals and helping out where I could. That early, hands-on rhythm shaped how I understand rural work — the pace, the pressure, and the pride that comes with it.
I’ve spent my whole career in the rural sector, from owner-operators through to a large corporate dairy group. I know the realities behind the numbers, and the responsibility that sits on your shoulders.
Steady Path exists to bring clarity, calm, and partnership to people who do real work in real communities.
